Day 21 – 14th May 2014 Wednesday. Kevin went running this morning up Anzac Hill Lookout. Nearly killed him. Spent time this morning uploading photos to photo stream before heading off to Simpson Gap in West MacDonnell Ranges. It is the closest site to Alice. Was hoping to do a walk but could not find the start of the one we wanted so just wondered down towards the gap. Was an interesting place. From here we headed to Stanley Chasm which mum had hyped up as the best place we will see. The car park was crowded with motorbikes and people were everywhere. Everyone is told to be there at noon to see the sun over the top etc etc. Well we lined up to pay an entry fee of $10 each and followed the crowds along the 1.2km nature trail that links the kiosk / car park to the Chasm, following a creek. We got to the Chasm and everyone is just standing looking up and waiting for the sun to arrive at the appointed time. The quartzite walls which are 80m tall glow from reflected sunlight to create a breathtaking display of stark form and rich colour. After about half an hour everyone turned around and walked out again. Kevin was a little disappointed and felt it didn’t reach the expectations as advised. From here we headed back for lunch. After lunch mum and I went for some retail therapy. Browsed around the main shopping area and bought a few odds and sods. Got fuel again at Shell, with Coles 4c discount being $175.9 When we got back it was nearly 5pm and Kevin decided to clean the car. Dad got fuel at IGA where he got 8c discount. He also talked to someone in the park who said the cheapest fuel was at the Shell Truckstop which is on the way into Alice from Tennant Creek direction and is 10c cheaper than anywhere in town. Next time hey! For tea we borrowed mum and dads turbo cooker to do some chips and I cooked some whiting. Yummy.
