Day 53

Today the sky was blue and there was no wind so we had chosen the perfect day for our cruise out to the Great Barrier Reef. We had an early start and then a bus ride from the caravan park to Shute Harbour. The boat left at 8.00am for Hamilton Island where some people disembarked and then other people joined the cruise. Unfortunately there was no time to explore Hamilton Island as we had a two and a half hour trip to the reef. On arrival we collected snorkelling equipment and wetsuits then joined a guided snorkelling tour for a swim along the edge of the reef. It gave an insight into the species on the reef as well as the reef itself and some water confidence to a couple who haven't swum for many years. After lunch we visited the groper viewing area, the underwater observatory and then took a trip in the semi-submersible which travelled along the edge of the reef. The whole trip was well organised with friendly staff, plentiful food and all day make yourself tea and coffee. The reef is a must see for all people visiting northern Queensland and we thoroughly enjoyed our day. It also gave us the opportunity to see some of the islands that make up the Whitsundays as we travelled out to the reef and so enjoy more of this beautiful area. The day ended with prawn salad for dinner.
