The Woodies Travel

Day 51

AUSTRALIA | Saturday, 6 August 2011 | Views [224]

The drive seemed long from Townsville to near Proserpine. We travelled through land that was so much like the land we have travelled over for much of the trip - savannah woodland, but there were also flat coastal plains covered in sugar cane or bare except for grass to feed the grazing cattle. Every now and again we would smell a caramel fragrance wafting in the air , which we first noticed when visiting Gordonvale, and then there was a sugar mill. As we neared the Whitsundays the growth along by the road became thicker and included pandanus, palms and creepers growing in the trees. At first we were allocated a space in the caravan park that had a palm growing one third of the way across the space making it too difficult to park but we managed to get a different space and the park manager parked the van for us. We then discovered our feathered neighbours - two curlew so we should get some screeching noises tonight. We did a quick wander along the main street and near to beach at Airlie before going to Cannonvale to Get the Weekend Australian, always a priority for John. Looks like the wind should be right for a reef cruise on Monday. If not we will just have to stay here a bit longer!!
