Day 9

AUSTRALIA | Friday, 24 June 2011 | Views [329]

Did some washing and cleaned inside the van and car, then had lots of cultural experiences. We visited the Araluen Cultural Precinct where there was a Beanie Festival in progress. So lots of people wearing a range of colourful beanies (almost Nimbin style) and many different beanies for sale. One for sale at a craft store in town looked almost suitable for the Melbourne Cup.  There was an Albert Namatjira gallery with some of his work as well as that of other aboriginal artists including Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri, whose work John much admires. There was also Craft Central where a workshop was running making felt beanies and people spinning and crocheting  plus a store selling local craftwork. We then had a very quick look at Strehlow Research Centre with the intention of returning tomorrow. After lunch we went into town and visited a number of galleries selling aboriginal art and were impressed by the quality of work available.
