13/14 August, Wednesday & Thursday

UNITED KINGDOM | Thursday, 14 August 2008 | Views [244]

Off to visit Marjorie and Winston today, after lunch. Marjorie and I have been friends for over 40 years and I met her a couple of weeks ago with other friends, for lunch in Liverpool; however, we hadn't seen Winston since 1971 so were looking forward to the reunion.

They live in Maghull, outside Liverpool and we arrived there around 3pm on Wednesday. It was so good to see them again and we were given a huge welcome. They have a lovely home, with a big garden and two cats. Winston was originally Burmese, although now British, and used to be a Merchant Seaman with Blue Funnel Line. He and Marjorie have been married for 36 years. They have no children and love to travel - they go overseas around three times a year and seem to have a full and interesting life travelling around the world.

Marjorie and Winston took us for a drive to Southport, on the coast north of Liverpool, for a look around. It's a nice place for a wander and there we saw England's Smallest Pub! When we got back we enjoyed a gin and tonic whilst Winston cooked us a scrumptious Burmese feast, which we enjoyed with champagne followed by Frangelico. We then looked at some photos and talked until well after 2am!

In the morning after breakfast, we sat around talking again (solving the world's problems, as you do) and reminiscing - it's strange how the years just disappear when talking with old friends and even though Ron and Winston didn't really know each other, they got on like a house on fire. We then had a delicioius lunch, again courtesy of Winston, and left around 2pm.

From Maghull we headed to Widnes to visit a friend, Averil, with whom I used to from when we married until I left to have Di. Again, it was so easy to slip back into talking together and we were pleased to meet her mother, Vera, a very sprightly 87 year-old. We spent a very pleasant couple of hours with them and also met Averil's sister, Hilary. After we left, we had another sneak peak at our old house, just down the road.

On to Allan and Dot's until tomorrow, when we will visit Chris in Parkgate, overnight until Saturday.
