Today Ron, Sam and I headed off to Hereford for a couple of days with Rob and Laura. On the way we called in for a last look around Stratford-upon-Avon and Anne Hathaway's cottage - actually, rumour has it that her house was not the one shown to tourists, but a smaller one a short way away!
We had a wander around the town and then went to Worcester, nearly getting wiped out on the way by a stupid driver who overtook a line of cars and came directly at us! Ron had to brake sharply and it really was quite frightening.
Worcester is a medium-sized city, famous for its Cathedral, its porcelain and its sauce and for several historic "happenings". After some difficulty finding a parking space, we walked into town and had lunch (just realised, nearly everyone of our daily reports involves food!). We walked up to the Cathedral but, as (a) there was a rehearsal for the Three Choirs Concert and (b) a lot of renovation going on, we didn't actually have a tour, just a quick look around and a visit to the gift shop.
The Cathedral is near to the river and close by is a wall with bricks labelled with the level of flooding in various years. What amazed us was the indication for the 2007 floods - around 10 feet high (over three metres). Sam remembers those floods well as she was travelling from Crowthorne to Hereford and they had to bypass Worcester because it was so water-logged. Thankfully there seems to be no lasting damage but, considering how many floods there have been over the years, it's amazing the walls are still standing!
We left Worcester and continued on to Credenhill, near Hereford, where Laura and Rob live. We had a lovely dinner and a nice, chatty evening.
