Serendipity on the road

Sunset in Hokitika

Sunset in Hokitika

Sometimes things just work out.

Hitching on the west coast has been way slower than the east as we move south. Last night we got stranded in Reefton, a small mining town, after six hours of trying to get a ride. Today we only made it to Hokitika before we seemed to wash out again. We called it a little earlier today, checking into a hostile and trying to cook dinner... Let's just say cooking potatoes is a work in progress.

Midway through the meal this guy from Canada showed up and asked us if we wanted to fish for eels. Why not, right? Camped out on some rocks along the beach, we watched the sun go down on the south island. It certainly wasn't the most productive day, and nothing had really gone to plan, but as the sun set and the surf swelled (and we watched a punk on a four wheeler get mired in the sand through his own stupidity), it was hard not to feel like everything had worked out just right.

Sometimes things just... work out.
