Seward is my favourite place in Alaska this trip. I don't know if it was because of the festive 4th of July atmosphere or the town itself, but I really liked it there. It's just a small place, but there seemed to be so much packed in it. The town is also situated between a mountain and the ocean. What could be better?
The mountain, Mount Marathon, is host to the famous Mount Marathon Race run every 4th of July. The aim is to race up and down this 3022 feet mountain in the shortest time possible. Leading racers can climb up in 33 to 40 minutes and come back down in 10 to 15 minutes. We saw an elderly gentleman finish the route in an hour and 59 minutes. He does it every year.
Then right next door is the Kenai Fjords National Park. We took a wildlife and glacier cruise into the fjords and it was just amazing! We saw sealions, humpback whales, orcas, sea otters (ok, one sea otter), a multitude of puffins and other birds and a calving glacier. And, I got tan and sunburnt. This is Alaska, in the summer, in the middle of a heatwave.
