Cows, eagles and Prince Rupert

USA | Friday, 19 June 2009 | Views [302]

Prince Rupert, where Canada's wilderness begins. And my entryway to Alaska. This is where I get on the ferry that will take me to Juneau. It's a charming little small town that seems to get into gear only on deys the cruise ships come in. That's when they set up a mini market in the one shopping street and have a little cultural performance or two. There's also a little touristy bit near the water called Cow Bay where, of course, many things are painted with cow prints. And I came across several interesting totem poles as I walked around town and up into the residential areas and parks. But the best thing about Prince Rupert has to be the numerous bald eagles that hang around the bay area. You can see them gliding overhead and sitting on jettys and treetops. I saw 2 having a battle that ended up in a tree. And as you walk around, and even from my window in the hostel, you can hear them calling. It was such an amazing experience.
