I survived hurricane Dean! It wasn’t as traumatic as I thought it would be. The village where I live, San Antonio, is all on high ground and inland. There was no rain or wind; it’s been sunny the past three days. However, northern Belize got hit hard, rain and high winds. Most of Belize, Corazal and Orange Walk Districts are flooded and many homes have been destroyed or badly damaged.
Preparing for the hurricane was worst than the actual storm. The entire clinic had to be packed up, wrapped in plastics and moved to the church basement for safety. Moving a clinic is not much fun, especially when there are still patients to be seen and supplies have to be taken out to all villages that the PCP covers.
We survived unscathed, and I am so glad for that. I hope that all my friends up north in Dangriga, Belize City and Belmopan are alight. The rest of the week will be for cleaning the clinic, re-supplying and organizing while everything is out and there is room. The weekend is coming up, and a trip to Guatemala is in the works.
Cheers!
