Waste Not Want Not

CAMBODIA | Sunday, 13 January 2013 | Views [181]

Started a new Science Unit with my class this week, focusing on materials and where they come from. With all of us being such wasteful human beings I thought it was quite fitting to have our first lesson on waste. We discussed ways that we waste things in our classroom and ideas came flooding out. Here are some of my class’ ideas:

  • Paper
  • Books
  • Water
  • Electricity
  • Food
  • Pencils
  • Time

Then the task was was set before them to create a poster to remind themselves, and others, how to use use the precious recourses that have been given to them by God. As always may class happily surprised me with their creativity and amazing illustrations. This drawing below would have to be one of my favourites.

Can you tell we have been discussing pencil wastage a lot in my classroom? We have now set up a new system where students drop blunt pencils in one basket and pick up a sharp one in just seconds. This hinders the “pencil-sharpening coma” that distracted students can easy fall into and turn their new pencils into nothing within minutes.

I am so proud of my students understanding of being good stewards with their materials and their desire to make wise choices so they can be enjoyed longer.
