Easter in Cambodia

CAMBODIA | Friday, 22 April 2011 | Views [200]

It feels a bit odd....it's Good Friday and I'm not at a church service, I am not munching a Hot Cross Bun and I am not on my way to a Christian music festival. I am.....at work?? Bit of a shift to be working on Easter day, but hey just because I am continuing in my volunteer role today that doesn't mean I don't get to make the most of Good Friday.

I have been teaching Kindergarten and Grade 2 two Easter songs with the true message of Easter within them. We have made lots of actions for the songs because these Cambodian kids love to move. Seeing them sing so loudly and get involved in the song - For example they love to jump in the air and shout 'Hurray!' after hearing that Jesus is alive. Even though I am teaching about Easter in their second language teachers have been helpful in translating the message and I know every child at this school has heard today the true meaning behind Easter.

My classes did make an Easter basket - just like what I would do with my classes in Oz, however mentos lollies and a lead pencil were given instead of chocolate eggs. The kids were very excitied with their gifts (even if they commented their baskets look like a hat).

So come Sunday I'll be having no Easter eggs, or even more Hot Cross Buns (preferably with choc chips) but I will be having a Easter dinner with friends and just getting together to celebrate our risen Lord. Maybe having Easter without the chocolate and fluff is a real blessing as it stops the distractions and allows me to be fully focus on Jesus and what he did for all mankind.

So....
Easter Friday Jesus has died
All his friends are sad and they cry
Sunday morning what a suprise
Jesus has risen! Hurray! He's alive!
