Holidays in Cambodia are a great excuse to party, yet it is Australia day and no huge party for me. I did, however, take the opportunity to share with my Pronunciation class about Australia day. I gave them a very brief (and simplified) history of the English coming to settle in Australia, and explained they were not the first Australians but we have the aboriginal (tribal) people.
I reckon no Australia day is complete without a singing of the national anthem. So we did that – and it was a lot of fun. I am now a recorded singer as students recorded the song on their mobile phone – ekk – but it was entertaining and I’m sure they got something from it.
So that’s one way to celebrate…..no BBQ, meat pies or cricket required, just a bunch of Cambodians singing the national anthem and having fun. Isn’t that the true spirit of being an Australian?
