Australia.....NYE

Up until New Years we tried to job hunt a bit (more on this later), explore Sydney, take advantage of beach life, and just take it all in!  This place has a hold on me……!

We had been told that for New Years we have to check out the famous Sydney Harbour fireworks. The big question was how we wanted to do that. There are various sites throughout the city that you can see them. You can pay for some and secure a spot, you can go to free spots but have to usually go early to get a good seat, some spots are family friendly while others are more suited to the younger crowd. Also, there was a huge concert on Bondi Beach too but quite expensive (last year they had Calvin Harris though!)……

Eventually after some reading and chatting (thanks Rob), we opted for a free adventure NYE in Sydney. Since we wanted to check out more than 1 spot (in case our first choice didn’t work out) we would just pop around the city by bus and try to get a taste of different places. We started at 6pm at Christison Park which is north of Bondi where its BYOB. We brought some Champagne and the plan was to wait there til 9pm for the “family” mini fireworks and then move on if we didn’t like it. The vibe was ok, the view mediocre, so at 9pm we walked down towards Dudley Page Reserve, which was a paid park that had a fantastic view of the harbour. Instead of paying $35 each, we walked down 1 block and found a small free park that had just as good of a view of the harbour. We relaxed until midnight and watched the fireworks from there. It really is a city wide event and I really like that. Everyone seems to get together at midnight to check it out! After the fireworks we caught a bus back to Bondi beach, grabbed a quick pizza and enjoyed some champagne and pizza NYE style! After that quick bite we went to the beach (1am) and caught the last hour of the concert--- Chemical brothers ! We finally called it a night after that…..we debated an NYE night swim but didn’t feel like fending off sharks :P

New Years Day we relaxed and later in the day headed to the beach because it was so nice out. I think my favourite pastime has become reading on the beach and Tom’s is swimming or surfing. It seemed like any other day on the beach but this one comes with a funny (not so funny?) story behind it. Tom likes to swim out past the waves because that is usually where there are less crowds. This day was no different and he went swimming at about 4pm. We found out the next day at my aunts that there was a shark sighting that same day at 2pm and they ordered everyone out of the water…..we got to the beach just a few hours after…..and Tom was swimming further out then everyone else…..you do the math!! :P
