The National Palace in Luang Prabang..backs on to the Mekong so that the visitors to the Royal family could disembark and make their way up to their hosts. The Royal family was in residence until 1975, when they were exiled during the revolution and whisked away to caves in the northeast of the country. Where, of course, they died one by one of inadequate food and medical care. Controversy and speculation abound...the Lao people will not enter the palace after dark as they believe it is haunted by royal spirits!!
