Valparaíso is connected to Viña del Mar, it's glitzy smaller neighbor, by train, bus and colectivo.  Despite the thick marine layer, we make the quick hop over to check out the much raved about beaches lining the very short shore line, high rise hotels and casinos.  It feels a bit like being in a convention city, like a small Orlando, or a mini-Vegas.  The beaches are pretty deserted today, and this is just bordering on high season.  Perhaps it's because Christmas is just a week away, and people are busy preparing for the holidays, and wrapping up work in the office.  We'd heard so much about Viña as the beach getaway for those living in Santiago, however, I think we prefer the Port of Valparaíso, and the artsy culture to the Viña Vegas on the Beach.
