Soaking in the Steamy Springs
GUATEMALA | Thursday, 20 September 2007 | Views [1012]
After four days of intense study, we are rewarded with a trip to Fuentes Georginas after class for today's cultural activity. It takes us nearly an hour by car to wind up the mountain side, taking in the gorgeous views of the volcanos and steaming sulfur pits. The surroundings are thick, lush and green, and clouds float in and out of our path. We walk a short distance and laid out before us are steaming hot pools, warmed by hot sulfur springs that have come about from the volcanic activity in this area. The pools are surrounded by lush tropical foliage extending up a dramatically steep cliff. While these pools are much smaller in comparison to the ones in Costa Rica at Tabacon, the small, remote location of Fuentes Georginas makes these the "small luxury host springs" of Central America. It's started to lightly rain, and we all slip into the hot water over slippery rocks. The water is considerably hotter near the edge of the cliffside, and the rocks along the cliff are so hot, you can't touch them. We soaked for hours with fellow classmates and the director of our school It's amazing how much easier the Spanish words flow once we've all relaxed. Hopefully the Guatemalans will keep these "low key" and protect/prevent them from turning them into an amusement park, tour bus attraction as has happened in Tabacon.
