11 People and A Leech Sharing a Shower
GUATEMALA | Wednesday, 19 September 2007 | Views [1436]
It's been four days and we now realize our living situation is not going to get better. And when we hear stories from other students about how great their home stays are, we realize what "could be." Our situation continues to rapidly deteriorate. We're not really sure who all the people are that are living in the house - as we've received no introductions from our house mother, and no information from the school. Each day we see new men appear. We wonder if they are relatives, friends, husbands or last nights date. Its very common in Guatemala for extended families to live together, so we'll assume that these are all brothers visiting for awhile. We only see these guys early in the morning, wearing nothing but a towel around their midsection, jockeying for position for a quick dip in the only shower in the house. This morning I counted eleven people in the house, including us. That's eleven people sharing one bathroom that hasn't been cleaned in years. Today there was a special treat in the shower... a leech. At first I thought it was a worm, but looking closer, it had the same look, and moves as those leeches we encountered deep in the forests of Laos. This thing must have made it's way through the busted up plumbing and flooring in the bathroom, and up through the hole in the floor drain and now is in search of blood. I'm not sure how much longer we can take living here in this filth. We could understand if we were living with a poor family that had a very minimal home with dirt floors, but this family is considered rather wealthy by Guatemalan standards.
