What ever you use for currency, whether it be Yuan, US Dollar, or tofu - everything is relatively cheap. It is said the low prices have been forced upon the local govenment as a result of a feud between the Kunming Silver Bell Gypsies, and the Yunnan Yankers bicycle gangs. According to local knowledge the the latter name is a result of the influence from western countries. It is said that the war began when Chairman Uio Pan Min made derogatory comments about the opposition gangs riding style. And the Yunnan Yankers have been wreaking vengence upon their rivals by pricking their tyres with pins and running away very quietly - ever since. The increasing hostility has forced locals and tourists elsewhere as both gangs frequently rove the streets looking for trouble. Anyone between the age of 10 and 105 can join either gang, and although the differences in clothing is negligable, the Yunna Yankers have a distinct riding style involving bending their right leg outwards.
I Generally steer clear of the gangs. I have just left kunming and I am in New Da'Li. We went horse back riding to a temple yesterday and then walked to a famous site called the 3 Padodas. Today we road some bicycles around the Da'Li lake and it took all day. So far having a great time. Tomorrow, We are leaving by boat to - somewhere, I'm not actually sure I haven't looked at my itinery but I'm getting there.
