My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

There's something special about imagery.
In my first journalism class, images of places overseas had captivated me. I saw different cultures and societies. But there was something else I saw that tied together every single image I had seen: the human spirit. A farmer in Kenya has the same concerns of how to provide for his or her family as a steelworker in China or a taxi driver in New York, despite the differences between their worlds.
I knew then that I wanted to travel as a journalist and capture the human spirit in my photographs so I could share them with my community. I want to show a world beyond the world most take for granted.
Since that day, I've been lucky enough to learn the basics of photography to produce the photo essays I've dreamed of making. I've even gotten to share some of my experiences, like one I had in Cuba, in lectures with high school students. Traveling with a mentor like Jason Edwards would help me improve my craft so that I could better convey the world at large through photography. Knowledge is my undying desire. Indeed, it is a practice that I hope to spend the rest of my life learning how to improve, for there will always be something to see.
