splotches on the ceiling

COSTA RICA | Friday, 7 September 2007 | Views [681]

it woke me up three or four times before I started to realise how loud the noise actually was...it was definately electronic and coming from inside the house. The most recent resonation of the noise woke me more fully from my slumber. It must have been in the early hours of the morning as no light was seeping in under my curtains...I rubbed my eyes and rolled onto my side looking toward the floor fan, trying to distinguish the syncopated clicking and whirr of the fan from the other noise I had surely heard..my head felt heavy and sank back down into the pillows...it was so hot i didn´t need sheets.

Sort of a grinding, like metal on metal - this time it wakes me up properly. I get up...I stumble over the the light switch and it occurs to me that perhaps it´s something inside the fans mechanism making the noise happen....I sit groggily on the edge of the bed communing with the upright fan as it continues its perpetual sideshow alley clown motions..waiting for a sign.....watching it makes me feel sleepy again..

Suddenly again this loud angry noise, but it´s not the fan and this time it scares me. It´s coming from outside the room. I hear the sound again...no mistake it´s inside the house....

I stagger out of my room and scramble for the light switch, always vaguely wary of the possibility of a terciopelo in the darkness slithering across the tiled floor..I switch on the light and wait....my ankle as stiff and a bit sore and I step gently on the ball of my foot to circulate the blood....and I wait..

I feel like the earths moving slightly under my feet. Suddenly a sharp bolt of the sound...it´s the bloody blender switching itself on and off.

I unplug it and put myself back to bed, confident that the humidity gets to everything here, not just the mind...there´s no such thing as ghosts no such thing as ghost....
