we discovered after trying to explain to dans family that we were going to cologne that cologne is pronounced koln in german...after that confusion it was much easier to explain our plans..
the train from bonn to cologne is only half an hour on a regional train, and the train pulls up at the base of the dom- a beautiful gothic style cathedral in the heart of cologne.
Hostel was close, however staying with friends and family is sooo much better then hostels..last night was hot and noisy in the room because its close to the middle of the city but really noisy with people and cars. neway, its still good to have a little of our freedom back and not have to ask if its ok to have a shower and search the kitchen for a glass..prob cz we dont have kitchens at this hostel..
before i forget...dad and any other car fans...last night in our room we met a really friendly american..started talking and it turns our he is a journalist for a luxury car magazine in america..even better his magazine flew him to nurnberg, germany to review the new aston martin vantage. He got to test drive them around the hills and visit the factory, also had a heap of professional fotos taken...dad, for my bday i want a green aston martin vantage...it looks awesome!i promise ill pay u back...one day.dan loves it because they can both talk about cars for as long as possible..and its been a while...
anyway, back to koln..stupidly after travelling europe for 2 months we forgot the golden rule..ALL museums are CLOSED on mondays. u would think we would have learned that, so we walked all the way to the choc museum to walk accidently into some conference and get booted out and told to come back tomorrow..oops. so we did, woke today and went to the chocolate museum which is sponsored by lindt. history and the making of chocolate and then how they make chocolate, and the truffles which we tried..really good. also had a shop with chocolate pasta?? also had free samples we thought looked awesome..however i think they were the duds or trial chocolates, cz a turkish delight truffle and one so dark and bitter it made mz throat sting..apart from those the chocolate was awesome, and it all smelt sooo good.
From the chocolate museum we visited the dom, and walked the 500 steps up the spire for a really pretty view of koln. although the walk up nearly killed us, weve walked alot bt we are not that fit! we have seen alot of churches, and koln is nice however its a similar style to the church in milan which was one of my favourite churches.
we heard there was an australian shop, and cz none of us brought vegemite, we walked there to find some vegemite. got there and put one jar on the counter while we looked aorund to then have a little german lady come in behind us and buy the remaining 4 jars..we only just got our jar by 5 mins..lucky, cz i was loking forward to a vegemite roll, and it was really good. shop had some interesting things..the girl was kinda strange, spoke english and kept telling really odd jokes that she was the only one laughing really hard at, also had didgeridoos made of bamboo..bbaahaha..a small can of milo for 16 aus dollars!no timtams or cadburys, but heaps of honey and video tapes of travelling aus..strage little shop bt worth the vegemite it supplied.
dan is currently talking cars..again...not much planned for tonight, koln is kinda quiet for night life during the weeks, so we will make our own fun.
love to all
love jess
p.s. the blac forest cake search continues!!i found a shop yest with cake..however we had just had lunch and there was no way i could fit cake in and still enjoy it..but i memorised the location and am planning on going back there..soon..cz today is our last day in germany. tomoz were on a 4 hr journey to bruge in belgium for 3 nights for waffles, chocolate and a bar called 400 beers that has -obviosly- 400 types of beer , even chocolate beer, however im not that keen on weird beers, the banana beer put me off them a little.
