Life in Kathmandu

My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Nepal | Monday, January 14, 2013 | 5 photos

A place that have changed my life has been my trip to Kathmandu in 2012. My first time in a third world country was big culture shock. I was completely awestruck by the rustic heritage-listed beauty of the country, the palaces, temples, holy sites. However, what is indelibly burned in my memory is the warmth of the people, how despite the hardships & widespread poverty, Nepalese are the most open, friendly people.
This experience has transformed me, and wetted my appetite for adventure, to go down the less travelled road, to experience different cultures and meet locals, and to show this to those around me through the medium of photography. As an avid collector and consumer of reportage photography I have always dreamed of following in the footsteps of greats such as Steve McCurry, James Nachtwey, & Paolo Pellegrin.
I've always been a very visual communicator and ever since I picked up my DSLR two years ago, I’ve have been shooting incessantly, striving to show the beauty that exists in everyday life from my own perspective. Through the scholarship I hope to learn from one of the industry greats, Jason, & to land a once-in-lifetime opportunity as a Nat Geo photographer!

About jefffen

Streets of Thamel, Kathmandu - It has never ceased to astound me the strength of the human will and I experienced this first hand in Nepal trekking where I had the fortune of being assisted by porters who would sometimes carry baggage double their body weight over difficult terrain. Riding in a rickshaw, speeding through busy Kathmandu streets, by pure luck, I managed to photograph this man who seemed to possess superhuman strength, dwarfed by the giant lounge he was carrying on his back.
