    The people of the Lofoten Islands are very dependant on the sea and the mercy of the nature around them. The world famous maelstrom (whirlpool) lies between two of the islands and although the weather in the islands themselves is milder than many areas with similar latitude, it is also somewhat unpredictable and can change suddenly. by: jbatryn Views[332] Sheep are a very important part of the culture and livelihood of rural Norway. It was not uncommon to encounter a group of sheep walking down the road or freely roaming in the mountains above the little towns. They provide a lot for the Norwegians ranging from their warm wool to an important source of dairy and meat. by: jbatryn Views[278] Fishing has left the biggest mark on the Lofoten Islands in terms of history and culture. In the past, almost everyone here made their living out at sea and many traces of that can still be seen, including racks upon racks of cod tied up on racks to dry and dried fish heads such as this hung as decorations. While diminished from what it once was, fishing is still a predominant industry in the Lofoten Islands. by: jbatryn Views[768] The Lofoten Islands are made up of many small fishing villages such as Reine here, nestled between lofty mountains that rise dramatically out of the Northern Sea. Simple fishing cabins (rorbuer) are built over the water to make use of limited space and fit in with a lifestyle centered around the sea. by: jbatryn Views[329] Situated north of the Arctic Circle, the Lofoten Islands experience the some of the extremes of an arctic environment while maintaining a relatively mild climate.
