La paz and death road (18-22 march)

La paz messes with your mind..its an awesome, somewhat vibrant city but in terms of cultural activities theres really not a lot to see or do..this lack of cultural activity leads to you not leaving your hosrtel to often (accept to party) and when your hostel is as good as loki theres really not too much reason to..

The first night we got here we basically went wild..A friday night in la paz is a sight to behold. we partied at the hostel, met some really cool people and then headed into town..drinks at oliverstravels was followed by yahtzee at route 36 (which is bazarr to say the least), with me managing to destroy a local chick 3 games in a row..its a destructive place to get caught and so after we had seen enough will and i decided to find a new haven for carnage..i met a bolivan girl and her 2 male friends and somehw we all ended u in ataxi with will..we cruised around for an hour in the tai as the bolivian girls was crazy..it was 4.30 in the morning and she had a flight to catch at 6 and still all she wannted to do was come back to the hostel.

After we ditched her and one of the lads (after persistant nagging will and i talked hector into comeing to party with us)we went to one of the only clubs still open, an all bolivian music club.we were only allowed in as we bribded the security guard and we had hector with us (who was bolivan). for 3 hours will and i stood in the centre of 2 massive circles of bolivians who seemed captivated by our naievity but were extremely friendly and keen to attempt conversations in english..shouting a rond also help enhance the jovial mood..after spendingmre than enough time there we retreated back to the safety of our beds..

As a result of friday night saturday was basically a write off..saturday night however was insane..the hostel had a 4 year anniversay masked black and whte party and there were shrits costumes and things going everywhere..met some of the boys from friday night and went to hard rock cafe..i called it quites here (will didnt get out of bed all day), lach and a few of the girls got tear gassed out of club haha..only in bolivia.

We cruised on sunday, wantered the streets and saw some amazing marketts..never ending..the people here seem friendly and its alot less threatening than brazil and argentina..we had a beautiful curry dinner at the star of india on sunday night (dad you would have loved it) and retired fo the first time for an early night in ka paz..in an ticipation for DEATH ROAD..YEEEW

Death road was amazing..we were picked up at 7.30 and headed up to 4,700 m where we began our journey..we all got kitted up and matched with our bikes, helmets etc, and to be fair the bikes and kit were quality..we were short of breath aftert 2 minutes but we tore down the tarred top section at a rate of knots..it was wet and hard to see but we held nothing back, and as would be the theme for the rest of the day lach and i led, not through our technical ability on mountain bikes but shere wreckless behaviour..

upon finishhing the top section we started on the real death road..at times 2m wide with a 600m drop to the side..it was surreal and amazing and up there with the most insane things i have done. We were, as i stated before completely wreckless and riding at a pace far beyond our capilities, the guide commenting on several occasions that we must be bored, not realising we were literally at the edge of our abilities..the photos will do it justice but it was breahtaking..had a couple of close calls of stacking, most of all when i got a flat rear and started carrering toward to edge of a cliff..luckily i pulled up just in time..the most fun on the trip was when i was able to try and catch the group..going as fast as i possibly could..on the final section, the most technical, i went flying over the handle bars into the bush, lucky not to fly over the cliff, break myself or the bike.i was able to get straight back up and chase lachie down, competitive juices flowing..we finished at 1100m, a 65km downhll desent..the longest in the world..it was an amazing day and we spent the afternoon drinking around the pool and retelling stories..under the encouragement of out tour guide we got drunk on the way home (he was by far the worst) and partied back at the hostel..it was an amazing day and night and ine we will never forget..if we get a chance we may even do it again as we will be back in lapaz on sat..yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeew
