    4 - Co-existence. The cows now roam freely on the verges and vacant land around Kingstownship. The owners (many of them Pitcairn descendants) pay a fee to allow grazing on the roadsides. The cows have right away on the roads and a fine is imposed if an animal is harmed. by: gailcook Views[249] 3 - Revival. Placed between the convict built fence and the Norfolk Pines, the Old Military Barracks was built by convicts to house the soldiers and officers during the second settlement from 1825 - 1855. These buildings have been restored and are in use today. When the English left for New South Wales, the Pitcairn's arrived in 1856 to settle Norfolk Island, with their descendants still living on the island today. by: gailcook Views[692] 2 - Seclusion. From the convict time through to the 1960’s, the Whaler was the only means of supplying Norfolk Island with goods, and it is still in partial use today. The main ship would arrive from Australia or New Zealand, anchored out at sea due to the reefs and rocky outcrops surrounding the island. The Whalers would meet the ship, exchanging supplies before returning to the small harbour. by: gailcook Views[191] 1 - Hope. A stark reminder of what the convicts built and lived in 1847 Kingston, Norfolk Island; they left this harsh land in 1855 to relocate to New South Wales. Some had served their time and being freed, taking up land locally or returned to England. The stone was quarried and cut locally with a nearby kiln burning the limestone to make the mortar. by: gailcook Views[228]
