A Hurricane Named Bill

Calm before the storm, Branch NF

For the past week everyone has been talking about the storm.  Hurricane Bill was working its way up the coast and headed directly to Atlantic Canada.  Discretion being the better part of valor, we decided to head inland to Gander to wait out the storm.  One hundred mile per hour wind and nylon tents are not compatible.  On the way we detoured to Bonavista, the root cellar capital of the world to visit another puffin nesting area.  This time we were able to approach within arm's length of the cuties for some great photos.

We are expecting strong winds and heavy rain tonight but the gannets at Cape St. Mary’s and the puffins at Bonavista are in for a bad time.  Puffins can hide in their burrows but the gannet chicks who haven’t learned to fly will likely not survive.
