Asturias - Pola de Somiedo

SPAIN | Saturday, 3 September 2016 | Views [343]

Hola, sorry for the delay uploading any new stuff, I thought I'd better get cracking today as me Dad thinks I've been kidknapped!!  Hope you all enjoyed the Bank Holiday weekend.

Pola de Somiedo

Back in the mountains to do some proper hiking. Stunning drive up the dramatic valley to Pola de Somiedo. The is farming land and very rural. Did fantastic 5 hour walk through cattle pastures up to a lake. Before we could start walk we had to drive 600 metres to a small hamlet, bit of a hair raising drive in a relatively large vehicle. There is a large population of wolves in this area so all the cattle are guarded by free roaming mega dogs with spiked collars. A bit daunting but they didn’t pay much attention to us until Mark got his ham butty out!!! There were other walkers in the area which we were glad about because it felt pretty remote. There were lots of original thatched cowherd huts dotted around the pastures which were really interesting.

This region is known for its 'fabada' or stews, so we made the most popular for tea which is white beans, black pudding, chorizo and fatty bacon. It was really gutsy and filling after a days walk. We are working our way through Rick Steins Spain cookbook!
