    We were asked to guess what the slide next to the stairs was used for. Guesses included of course a way of getting down quickly without using the stairs and moving large items to the bottom. It turned out to be a laundry machine. Water used to drain down it so you would release your clothes at the top and allow them to tumble down to the bottom.
