This crater was the birthplace of the Moai. The were literally cut out of the mountain side from this location and transported to remote locations around the island.

Probably the most spectacular site on the island. Fifteen Moai that were knocked over in the 17th century by fighting tribes then scattered around the area in 1960 by a Tsunami caused by an earthquake. Chilie and Japan collaborated in 1992 to erect the Moai and we were sure glad they did.
