    I met a friend who had been living in India for a while before I arrived. Over a conversation on a bus ride, we talked about how he was used to being the majority at home and in India, experienced being a minority and always looked at for the first time. I talked about how I felt caught between not wanting to be the stereotypically loud and obnoxious American college student but not the stereotypically obedient Chinese daughter either. by: crystalcyan Views[163] In Kerala, I had a bit of a disagreement with someone I was traveling with. He thought it would be fun to tell a mutual friend that I was making stereotypical jokes about Central Americans, and I was upset because I personally don't joke about racial stereotypes. While I was framing this shot, it reminded me of a park near home, so I decided to explain why, from my background, with many friends who are Mexican-American, I couldn't tolerate what he thought was funny. by: crystalcyan Views[230] In Jaipur, almost every shopkeeper would shout, In Delhi, my friend from Britain and I were traveling around by ourselves to meet up with another friend. Out of nowhere, these children surrounded us and started snapping photos with their cameras. My friend became very upset, and explained how she could never live in India because she was so sick of people taking her photo, and it was only then that I realized she had never been a minority before. by: crystalcyan Views[151] I visited Auroville, an experimental township near Puducherry. I was standing near some trees, and while most people were busy taking photos with the famous dome, I stopped for these flowers in a bowl of water and attempted to decipher what the sign said. My somewhat unusual behavior drew the attention of another tourist who was Indian, and through that, we began to chat and he told me a bit about how he didn't travel much usually since he wanted to save up and take his mother to Hajj. by: crystalcyan Views[201]
