The 'hanging houses' of Cuenca

The 'hanging houses' of Cuenca

Headed up to Zocodover Plaza this morning to jump on the hop on - hop off bus. Zocodover Plaza is a marketplace that sits high in the old city - that high we were getting escalators to the top. As we're traveling up this massive escalator who should be coming down but our US friends we met in the marketplace in Madrid. Jumped on the open roof double decker bus that toured the perimeter of the old historic city - with views across the River Tajo that surrounds the city on 3 sides.

In the afternoon we headed off to Cuenca for a scenic road trip. Well at least Col thought it was scenic - excellent highway,  countryside very dry and there was a stretch of over 70ks where we didn't see any other vehicle traveling in the same direction. All this on a 120kph highway!

Cuenca is a world heritage listed site famous for its Casas Colgadas, or hanging houses.  The houses are perched on top of the Rio Huecar and almost seem to overhang. Very stunning. Col reckons Scott has outdone himself again - our apartment is superb. It also sits at the top of a cliff, just not like the hanging houses. Ate at a local restaurant recommended by our host, Laura. Did not disappoint. Ordered too much food - something must have got lost in the translation! Was very cheap in any event. We seem to fit right in, everyone eats late in Spain.  There were people still coming in for dinner after 10pm.
