Bears are one of the top predators here (there are also wolves and mountain lions but so far we haven't seen either, so they don't make this list). Both grizzly bears (the most aggressive) and black bears live here and we have seen both types, usually as black/brown dots on the edge of the forest or with the cubs up in a tree whilst the mother looks for food. The best bear encounter so far was when we saw a female black bear and her two cubs cross the road just in front of us one evening. So strong and powerful, yet somehow so appealing.
It has been great to see bears as long as they are just going about their business. A bit scary though when you are camping and hiking - we try our best not to smell or look like any kind of tasty food!
