Zipaquira is a lovely town with an old colonial plaza and an absolutely massive salt mine honeycombed under the hill. Part of the mine has been carved into an underground salt cathedral, one of only three in the world, and voted by Colombians as the country's top "wonder".
It looks like rock but if you lick it (well, you have to try it, don't you), it is definitely salt!
The tunnels through the salt rock take you past 14 symbolic representations of the stations of the cross (representing the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus), carved by Colombian artists, to a huge underground salt rock cathedral 180 metres below the surface, all lit in blue and purple.
A very moving place.
