Thanks to my very generous colleagues at Severnside Housing, we spent a fab morning kayaking in Byron Bay. The surf was fortunately quite calm as we paddled as furiously as Maori war canoeists to get out from the beach (singing Hawaii five-oh - well Adam did while I just yelped quite a bit as the waves hit us). The surf lifeguards took us out into the bay and past the reef where turtles were swimming. We had to paddle between some rocks and at that part there is a deep channel which attracts a lot of fish because the warm water meets the Pacific current. A great white shark swam underneath us. It wasn't like Jaws, it just ignored us completely and went on its way. We were completely oblivious to it until the guide told us after. However we did decide not to snorkel just in case it was feeling a bit peckish. We paddled out into the Pacific, the waves were quite big but we just bobbed up over them. As we were paddling back in, three dolphins swam by us, staying by the boats for about five minutes Just curious as to what we were and what we were doing. They even body-surfed the waves and just seemed to be playing in the sea once they realised we just wanted to watch them. It was a brilliant experience and it really was the icing on our surf safari cake of Australia.
