This morning
Roni was up early (one of the benefits of sleeping on a hill – you slide...)
and after some confusion managed to get the shower working. It was hot too –
joy! Back up the hill and hung the fly out in the sun to dry then got brekkie
going as Bray cleaned himself.
Breakfast in
the sun, quiet and with a view was great...as was paying the bill! Cheapest
camping of the whole trip (apart from Figueres who takes the cake). We then
used their wi-fi to catch up on emails etc, had a REAL coffee and Roni used the
website to find camping spots for the next few days.
On the road
to Burgos next (past signs that could have taken us to Miranda – we got photos
Randles!). This town was beautiful. First we got a park in the shade then set
off in search of the cathedral...awesome fountains, pretty tree lined walks,
river running through the town and a funky new museum all added to the
experience. Found the cathedral with ease and took some pics before a sangria
and tapa lunch in the sun (our one dining out splurge for Spain!). Walked
around the cathedral after this taking more photos before heading back to the
car as time was flying by and we had a lot more driving to do.
The next
section of road was Roni’s favourite so far! We drove through the high desert
like area for ages – with Camino de Santiago spots along the way, rugged roading,
high altitudes (1070m), tiny Midwest type towns and many more windmills. So
much dry-ness we have seen through Spain so far!
We saw HUGE
birds of prey at one point – amidst great chasms, rock cliffs and amazing
scenery. Lots of photos, many squeaks from Roni at the cool things around us
and a few stops to try and take it in. Definitely getting into bandit country!
Suddenly we
came upon GREEN. Something we have been missing in Europe so far. We hit the
rolling pastures of Basque land and could see the sea again. Even found some
sheep, cows and burro. So refreshing to smell nice smells again (the West of
Spain seemed permeated with a less than lovely scent), see green and water.
We made it
to Suances as the sun was sinking but couldn’t find our campsite using the
directions Roni got off the website. Drove around many streets in the area
(quite a few of them more than once!) and found the lighthouse – not what we
were looking for but cool nonetheless. We clambered out to the point and gazed
at the surf pounding the cliffs, took photos (on Bray’s phone as camera
batteries had all died by this stage) and then got back to searching. Gave up
after a couple more circuits of the town and fortunately the info site was
open. Turned out the campsite we had driven past and discounted as ‘not ours’
WAS actually ours! Oops.
Checked in
and followed the man on his moto up the hill to our site. We could see the sea
from it! Stoked. It was kind of like being in NZ again with the coast line
smells and seagulls squawking away... Got
the tent up and dinner prepared in time to eat it looking at the view in the
last of the sun. Plugged the batteries in to charge using the plug in the
ladies loos and we were ready for bed. Grass under us once again – happy campers.
