    Crayfishing is big business, but is shack life worth it? Some think not; where there was once up to forty fishermen, there are now just five. Their shacks are left abandoned, uninhabited and have an unknown future. by: afn Views[439] The Western Rock Lobster: 5.5 million kilograms of these are pulled from Australian waters each year. Most are exported to China, Japan and America and can fetch up to AU$45 a kilogram. by: afn Views[335] Since the closure of a fuel supply near the shacks, fishermen now make the 260km round trip to a nearby town to buy fuel and bring it back in drums. Once back at camp they ferry it by dinghy and load it onto their boats by hand. by: afn Views[281] When asked about the loneliness of shack life, Fluffy replied “you have good days and bad days, but it’s been in my blood all my life. I would never do anything else”. Having some mod cons can help as well. by: afn Views[347] On a remote stretch of the Western Australian coastline a small community of fishermen reside in shacks along the beach. They make their living by catching Western Rock Lobster, known locally as crayfish.
