Why is that my Italian students can remember so many verb conjugations in their own language but yet not recall a simple 's' in English?

Let me explain. If we look at the simple present tense, an Italian verb has 6 words (vado, vai, va, andiamo, andate, vanno). Instead English just has two (go, goes). Simple. Right? I mean, instead of 6 different words, English just has two. Let's not even talk about the simple past tense of regular verbs. Anyway, I just don't get it....why can't they put a freaking 's' on third person singular?! There are only two possible choices of words.

Students themselves will joke about how easy English is...well, more than joke, they will put down the language comparing it to their more sophisticated Italian tongue. But, I ask myself... if English is so easy, why do they keep making the same old simple mistake?!
