Day 105 – 14th July 2016 Thursday – Wanaka to Queenstown

NEW ZEALAND | Friday, 15 July 2016 | Views [345]

After breakfast we took some luggage down to the car and then decided to go for a walk along the Lake. It was drizzling with rain and a cold wind was coming off the Lake. Mum only managed about 10 min before she said she was going back. I continued on intending to go to Waterfall Gully but when I looked at my watch it was 9.15 and I needed to get back and to check out by 10am. It took half an hour to get back and we finally checked out. We decided to drive either way around the lake and drove toward the snow capped mountains to Glendhu Bay. We took a number of photos of Mt Aspiring and turned back and saw the walkway to Roy's Peak which Shauni had done only 2 days previously. She had been lucky that she had good clear weather as the peak now has a lot of snow on it. We headed off for Queenstown on the Cronwell Road as the other was closed due to the heavy snow fall and only vehicles with chains were permitted. We arrived at Frankton BP where we were to pick up the key for our Air BnB unit. We then travelled on through the centre of town where there were tourists everywhere and the traffic was horrendous with stop start. We finally arrived at U4, 10 Glasgow St and as advertised our views were Million Dollar Views. We have an uninterrupted view over Lake Wakatipu  looking out to the mountains that are snow topped. Later in the afternoon I drove into town to find out where the location of Eb's day out was finishing for dinner at World Bar. There are plenty of one way streets and I am glad for the GPS. Once I finally found a park I walked around and went  to the supermarket for some supplies and the information centre for a map. Again there a plenty of Restaurants, bars, cafes and snow wear stores everywhere. Queenstown is a very compact town built on the edge of a mountain range on one side and the Lake on the other. We arrived at World Bar around 6pm and Karen, Eb and all the girls that went on the ‘day out’ were already seated and nibbling. They had spent the afternoon cruising on TSS Earnslaw, a steam boat that cruised the Lake and visited  Walter Peak High Country Farm where they watched sheep being sheared and had high tea before heading back. Several others came just for dinner like us including Mel a lawyer friend, Heather, Reece's mum and her friend, Shirley who was dropped off by Peter. Tracey, Karen and Anne were drinking tea pots of cocktails and offered me to join but as I was driving I declined. We ordered dinner and both mum and I had a Caesar  salad as we were craving greens. After dinner Irma and Dwayne, who had just arrived  came and the grown ups all went home while the young ones continued on.
