Making Do
COSTA RICA | Friday, 10 September 2010 | Views [274]
The guest house in Esperanza where I am staying is no
5-star hotel. A work in progress, open spaces let in plenty of insects that are
attracted to the lights at night. But you have to make do with what you have.
There is currently no sink, and so to shave today I did so with a trickle of
water from a spiket in the shower and the bottom of a metal coffee carafe to
view my reflection. Soon the washing machine will be hooked up, but for now
laundry is done in the shower or in the river. And my favorite so far has been
the use of a compost toilet (aka a 5 gallon bucket under a toilet seat, and
when you are done you spread some sawdust in the bucket). BUT, compared to Phil
and Ginnee’s house we are living the good life with not only electricity, but
also because we have hot showers. Sweet!
