ONE OF THE ADVANTAGES OF HAVING A GUIDE is their knowledge, not only of the birds in general, but of specific individuals. This is especially true of owls, those feathered denizens of the night. Rockjumper guides would often inquire, “Who wants to look for owls?” not an enticing prospect after a long day of birding. Arturo, led us to the hollow trees in which they nested. After a couple of taps on the trunk, the owl peeked out of his hole — to see “whoo” was there. Actually, pygmy owls don’t hoot but I could hardly resist. And neither does the barelegged owl.

Hummingbirds are also territorial and like they sang in The Music Man, “Ya gotta know the territory.” Arturo was able to take us to a tree favored by the Bee Hummingbird, the smallest bird in the world!
