    The local government of Gunungkidul has developed an enormous reservoir called Embung Nglanggeran. In Javanese, “embung” means pond. This artificial lake is built in the peak of primeval volcano Nglanggeran, around 500 metres above sea level. It is used for watering purposes and, recently, as tourism attraction as well. by: tranquillity Views[571] Imsak, 27 year old, a young villager from Semanu, Gunungkidul, took a “wudhu” or an Islamic ritual before praying. He used the water from a reservoir tub held rainwater during the wet season. by: tranquillity Views[529] During the rainy season, people in the karts area (the south part of Gunungkidul) develop the “rainwater harvesting” by using their individual reservoir tub outside their houses. Every roof gutter is arranged to flow the rainwater to fill in their reservoir tubs. When the dry season lasts long, they get to buy clean water from the supplier. This costs them around IDR 150,000 (AUD 15) per 5,000 litre. It is equal to an average monthly income for them. by: tranquillity Views[555] The topography of Gunungkidul consists of three main characters: alluvial land in the north part, fertile plateau in the middle, and karts hills full of limestone in the south part. This effects to the various drainage systems. In Beji village, Ngawen, as part of the north Gunungkidul, the villagers are lucky enough to have shallow aquifer in limited quantity. They maintain to use the river flow, Kali Jurug, for their daily need by employ a local wisdom management: the highest area of the river for cooking, the middle one for human other needs like bathing, and the lowest is for their cattle. by: tranquillity Views[617] Gunungkidul, the southest part of Yogyakarta Special Region, in the heart of Java island, Indonesia, is the most affected area during dry season.
