Ok, to say I was a little excited when I found out about the
World Sumo Championships being in Chang Mia…well lets just say it was a bit of
an understatement. However, things really got out of control when I found out
it was FREE! I mean, I was going to get to sit and watch scantly clad large
people try to push, shove, and throw each other out of a ring on top of a dirt
mound. Seriously, how could I resist?
So I must do a little fessing up. Today wasn’t actually the
World Championships, those are on Sunday. Today was the Asian Championships,
and I had time and company willing to join me, so this Friday afternoon was it.
It was amazing how such large people could be so flexible
and at times so graceful. The moment that demonstrated that, was when one of
them went flying through the air and landed completely aware of his body. A
ballerina couldn’t have done it better! Another highlight was watching the
women’s Sumo as it was the first time I had seen women Sumo wrestle.
One of the most entertaining parts was watching the team
matches, as sometimes a heavy weight would be matched with a light weight. We
wondered out loud who thought that would be a good idea.
The Thai’s didn’t do so well. But the Mongolians gave the
Japanese a run for their money. All in all it was a very entertaining and
enlightening afternoon. The best part of the whole experience: for once I was
sitting in a room in Thailand
where I didn’t feel like the fattest person in the room!
