So, I have been trying to get in contact with Carmen Gomez, a woman in Lima who I have been in contact with over the net. She has been helping out with the earthquake that happened last August and also in the areas of child prostitution. It has been difficult to get in contact with her, so I have been getting to know some of the locals in the city.
I met Joel's friend Victor, who was also a great guy. Luckily Diana was able to translate most of the conversations I had with the local boys. I´m generally not a picky person when it comes to where I´m staying... but I got a little uncomfortable when there was no water in the apartment for a day. I guess it just reminds me of how easy it is for people to live comfortably in Sydney.
After hanging out with Joel and his friends for a couple of days, roaming the city streets and eating the local dishes, I decided to stay with another person I had met on the Couchsurfing website... Cesar.
I met him in Miraflores, a district of Lima where most people are living the high life. Comfort, expensive clubs, and a hell of alot of tourists. I went there because i thought that was where Cesar lived... but no... I was going to San Martin de Porres.
San Martin de Porres is an impoverished district, about an hour from Mira Flores. But this is certainly the side of Lima I´d prefer to experience.
Finally I got a shower!! Although I was debating whether to put my head under the freezing water to wash my hair or not... I finally got the guts. Cesar´s house is built upon a hill of concrete rocks, which you can see from the non-existant roof just outside the loungeroom. This may sound like an uncomfortable place to stay, but i can asure you, it feels warm and welcoming.
