    We you can't afford a bike or a car the only way to get around is walk. Views[1010] Education is the key to breaking the poverty cycle even if it is in a mud hut with no electricity. Kids start school at the age of 3 for half a day. By the time they get to primary school they need to know English. Views[1885] The cool thing about war ending is that people are now safe to start their own businesses and lead a peaceful life. Here is a bakery in Gulu that employs a few young guys. The smell of the bread baking was exceptional. Views[328] People displaced by war have had to live in these huts for over 20 years. Now the government is telling people to go back to their homeland but they don't even know where that is. There's no water, school, crops, or anything. They have to start from scratch.     It's mainly the women who have to walk a really long way to get water but when it came to getting a photo only the men were around. I bet the ladies were out working in the fields. At least they don't have to walk far for water now. Views[528] The results of having access to water. More deep bore wells are needed for so many people but it all comes down to how much money we can raise and fundraising is a lot of hard work. Views[406] No light in a mud hut was tricky for photo taking but the look on these girls faces were worth it. Views[515] Yep, these are uni students at a conference. No, it's not a tin shed, well sort of. They were here for 9 hours on a Saturday asking the same questions that young people in the West do - how do I know I should marry this particular person? Views[283] Kids are taught by rote, so they know how to rattle off the answer but to think critically is another thing all together. They also had no idea where Australia is. Mind you, the average Aussie student would have no clue where Gulu is. Views[409]
     
    Education is so prized that primary school kids will come to class even on Saturdays. In Gulu this was one of only a few empty classrooms. Note the lack of power, whiteboards and resources we depend on. Views[926] If it weren't for the background I would say this would be one of my most favourite photos. As soon as he saw us his face broke into this huge smile and started running to greet us. Views[268] It doesn't matter where I am in the world as soon as kids see a camera they can't help themselves and get silly. These kids were no different. When they saw themselves on the video screen they thought it was the most hilarious thing they'd ever seen. Views[558] These kids don't have the money to pay for school fees so instead one of their jobs was to collect water for their families. We would baulk at the idea of a 4 year old carrying 30kg's of water but to them it's all they've ever known. Views[643] While checking out the hand pump who would come along but a couple of women and a child. They told us they were very happy because they didn't have to walk 7km's each day just to get water. Instead it was only a couple of minutes walk. They weren't too keen on getting their photo taken until they discovered we were the ones who got the well organised. Views[332]
     
    One of the deep bore wells we were checking out for an orphanage in Gulu. Lizzie gives the hand pump a good going over before tasting the water. Views[325] Watoto Baby Village is a relatively new initiative. Looking after babies from one day old to two years the dedicated staff nuture the babies as if they were their own. Views[640] The roads are boringly straight most of the time from Kampala to Gulu. Sometimes the potholes are as big as a car but it has improved a lot in the last couple of years. Views[899]
