Excellent opportunity! This is very exciting.

Quick question: my partner and I tend to work jointly on our travel movies--we think our combined strengths make better films. Is there a way for two people to apply together? Or must the applicant be a single person?

Many thanks!

Could I do it in portuguese, and use legends in english?

  Fabíola Corrêa Jul 1, 2008 10:58 AM

7

Yes a foreign language video with legends is acceptable, but you do need to be able to speak and write English fluently as the mentor is English speaking.

Under T&C's ...

17. It will be a condition of entry that both scholarship applicants and the scholarship recipient will grant a non exclusive copyright license to World Nomads, Nat Geo Adventure, World Expeditions and Lenovo to reproduce the work for subsequent promotion of the World Nomads Travel Scholarships.

So you are basically saying whoever send in their work, the image/footage will be used FREE OF CHARGE by all the organisations mentioned above in any purpose (mostly commercial, I guess), with only ONE person gets selected as winner.

I think we know who the real winner is! What a great way to get your hands on other people's work without even trying and at virtually zero cost! This is no difference from the competition World Nomad trying to promote on FLICKR, by grabbing other people's hard work for free.

Just be careful with the small prints if I were you.

I would like to clarify the above post, as what you say is not correct.

The clause does indeed state;

The important part of this clause is actually - "for subsequent promotion of the World Nomads Travel Scholarships" - meaning World Nomads and our program partners may use the content to promote the Scholarship Program ONLY - but no other commercial purpose.

You may see for example on our Scholarships page we have used images from our 2007 Travel photography Scholarship winner - Cameron Herweyenen to promote the Scholarship Program. If however, we (or any program partner) wished to use one of these images on a billboard to sell travel insurance - this is not included in the Scholarship agreement and would be on normal commercial terms in negotiation with Cameron.

All rights remain with the Scholarship recipient and they are free to publish or sell their work without any conditions from World Nomads or our program partners.

It is an incorrect interpretation of this clause that the content may be used for "any purpose".

Apologies if this did not read clearly and please let us know if there is still any confusion about this clause.

We are absolutely committed to making these Scholarships and mentorship opportunities a stepping stone for talented individuals starting out in their career and warmly welcome any feedback on how we can improve these opportunities.

Hi - do you require music and images used to have copyright clearances and/or be copyright free?
Many thanks for providing such a wonderful opportunity.

When applying for the scholarship and uploading you will need to abide by the terms of use for Nat Geo Adventure - they are listed on their website as follows;

5 Golden Rules for Creating a Blog
(common, if you can endure taking the longest route to Helsinki flying Aeroflot, you can cope with a few basic blog rules!)

1. FOOTAGE + PHOTOS. Must all belong to you you you!
2. TIME. Your vid should be 3 mins or under. Anything longer is boring.
3. MUSIC. No, you can’t use commercial tracks. People sue your arse! Tracks must be copyright free and we can help. Music for your vids will be available to download from Blognotes shortly.
4. KEEP all original footage. If we love you and your work, it might get a run on the Nat Geo Adventure tv channel. This means we’ll need the original source material.
5. HAVE FUN

Also the Scholarship is an opportunity for an individual rather than a group.

Even though I am of Lithuanian origin for some reason I get along with the Indians like they were my family. This opportunity would be ACE.

  Algis Kemezys Aug 4, 2008 11:41 AM

17

I was planning on submitting a piece that I made for my Documentary class, in which I used some music that does not belong to me. Because it was for school and I am not using it for profit it falls under "fair use" would that be considered unacceptable here?

Thank you so much for providing such a fantastic opportunity! Win or lose it is an amazing feeling just being given the chance to dream big!

  Laura Aug 5, 2008 4:39 AM

18

Hi laura,

It depends on the copyright - when you say it doesn't belong to you - is it a commercial track or was it composed by someone you know? If its commercial you shouldn't use it as you are leaving yourself open to be sued! If this is the case - can you just change the music to something free from copyright?

any suggestions?
thanks

  dvm71 Aug 21, 2008 4:31 PM

21

Hi - is it a file size issue? Nat Geo are looking at increasing this to 20mb very shortly - or can you tell m a bit more about precisely what problem you are experiencing so I can try and sort this out for you?
Thanks,

  scholarships Aug 21, 2008 5:03 PM

22

Hey thanks for getting back to me so quick.
The file is 14.7 meg flv file. so it should be ok. After logging in and choosing file/filling out info/ticking legal box etc I press send and nothing really happens. The curser has an hourglass or timer depending on browser and then times out with messages-
"The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy" etc
I should add that I can access all the rest of their site. It just goes wrong when trying to upload files.
Im just wondering if they are having problems with their server or maybe I should try an off peak time or another connection.
Again thanks for your help.

  dvm71 Aug 21, 2008 6:46 PM

23

Hi everyone.
If your experiencing problems with the your uploads send an email to info@natgeotv.com.au

The video upload feature has been tested several times, and is working in order.

Nat Geo Channel Aug 22, 2008 11:13 AM

24

I had trouble uploading using Safari; it would upload about 20% then would abort. After 6 attempts I used Firefox and it uploaded successfully on the first attempt.

  Spirit of 76 Aug 24, 2008 9:45 AM

25

I'm so glad I found others are having this problem - I have tried uploading maybe 15 times from 2 different computers - file size is only 10 meg, so I don't know what the problem is. I get to about 10% and then it says 'error - thread aborted'. I will try sending an e-mail. I see I am not the only one having trouble.
Kind regards.

  jay martin Aug 26, 2008 1:00 AM

Hi all - make sure you email Nat Geo directly if you are having technical problems - they can help you, and if you still have problems, they will upload the video for you;

The technical problems I was having are now resolved and I uploaded this morning with no problem. Thanks for the support.

Should i see a confirmation page or receive an email after submitting the application? After clicking done it just returned me to the homepage.

Thanks! I know I am late to apply for scholarship now.
Actually I am an Indian doctor, crazy for travelling and learning new things. I have travelled up to kanyakumari (southern end of India) on bicycle before 10 years and did Manali-Leh-Shrinagar route on motorcycle last year. I made a Travel documentary on this tour. I have written many travel stories in lacal Newspapers. I have my medical practise in Rural Maharashtra and I am also involved in rural development programme. I dont want scholarship but kindly absorb me as a team member of Rajastan programme. I will travel at my own costs. I promise to make the best use of this opportunity.

hi,

I don't know if i understood the terms and condition properly, regarding the flight. will the scholarship program covers the airfare from the recipient's point of origin up to the site's destination? Or do we shoulder our own airfare going to the connecting airport for to India. e.g. Manila to Bangkok then Bangkok to India... Please enlighten me. Thanks
