More On Hiking Up An Active Volcano

On the way up Pacaya, an active volcano.

On the way up Pacaya, an active volcano.

As Elena described, Pacaya was pretty awesome. We didn't get next to molten lava as our neighbor Leif did, but the lava we stood on was still giving off a lot of heat. It was a long, bumpy ride there, and it was a hot day. We were wondering if the kids would be able to make a 1 hour hike up there, especially since we got them up at 5:30 that morning to catch the van at 6AM. When we got out of the van to start the hike, there were several guides with horses offering their services. What a relief - we hired horses for both kids. This turned what would have probably been a death march of complaining and cajoling that ends with one of us turning around with the kids (never making it to the lava fields) into one of the highlights of their trip. It only cost about $16 round trip for each of them - way cheaper than any horseback ride at home.
