Sydney - Santiago - Buenos Aires

Hola, just a quick update to let you know I'm still alive.

After Tonga I went back to Sydney for four days before catching my flight to Chile last Monday. I left Sydney on Monday afternoon at 12 and arrived in Santiago De Chile at 1pm on the same day, we even had time to stop in Auckland for two hours. So my Monday morning was spent in Sydney and the afternoon in Santiago.

Santiago is surrounded by the snow capped peaks of the Andes, which are very beautiful if you can see them as the smog from the city is trapped by the mountains.

There´s not a lot to see in Santiago and a full day of walking around the city is enough to see all the sights.

On Thursday I flew to Buenos Aires with LAN Chile airlines, the same airline that I flew from Sydney with. All their planes have entertainment systems and tv screens on the seat in front and although the flight was only 1.5 hours to Buenos Aires they gave us a free sandwich, Ryanair take note.

I have been travelling for almost six weeks now and apart from Sydney I haven't met any Irish people until I came to Buenos Aires.

I was at the information desk in the airport and met a lad from Tipperary and we shared a taxi to the city. I hadnt got any hostel booked so I went to the same one as he had booked. Around 85% of the people in the Hostel are from Ireland. The recession and the rain has certainly cleared the place out and a few people I have spoken too have one way tickets to Oz to work.

Buenos Aires is a 24/7 party city and it isn't uncommon to stay out on the tiles until 9 or 10am before getting a sleep and doing it all again the next night. The clubs and pubs only get going after 1 or 2am and there's always an after party and then an after after party :-) I havent been one of those people coming back from a night on the town at 9 or 10am, yet :-)

I have just come back from the Buenos Aires Marathon Expo and got my race number for tomorrow. If I finish the 42km tomorrow morning it will be nothing sort of a miracle. I havent trained since the Sydney marathon and I have a bit of a knee injury which I might need to get looked at soon. I will be back on tomorrow with an update if I complete it. I have a lot to live up to as the whole Hostel knows about the run and theres a few bets been placed already. Funny enough noone has volunteered to get up at 6am to cheer me on but I might see a few of them on the way home.

THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO HAS SENT ME GOODLUCK EMAILS AND MESSAGES, I NEED IT :-)

This afternoon we are going to see Argentina beat Uruguay in their world cup qualifying match, really looking forward to that and then next week if I am still here I hope to catch the River Plate vs. Boca match which is suppose to be the biggest derby in SA football, someone described it as an old firm match multiplied by 100.

Thats all for now folks, oh and just to let you know I have no phone signal here at all so no texts as you will be wasting your money.

Take care and will be back on here in a couple of days with a marathon update after I get out of the hospital :-)

Adios!

Hi Paul,

Are you alive? Where are you now?
You not commented anything about us in your blog, Zete stayed very sad because stole her idea about "Run Paul, Run". When'll you came from Brazil? Why won't you participate of São Silvestre Maratona? Write for us.
Keep in touch.

If you want a free, objective way to check the reception in your area BEFORE you lock yourself with a specific carrier, you should really check out "Got Reception?" (http://www.gotreception.com).
