Sydney Marathon

AUSTRALIA | Thursday, 25 September 2008 | Views [721] | Comments [1]

Sorry for the delay in posting but I haven't had a sec since leaving Sydney to get on the net.

Hope all is well with everyone and the weather back home has improved a bit, actually I dont really care :-) its a cool 20degrees here in Tonga.

Anyways just a quick piece on the Sydney Marathon.

At 5am last Sunday the 21st I was applying my factor 40 in the hostel before catching the train to near the start line of the Marathon. The half Marathon was the first off at 6:15am and then we got underway at 7:15am.

The route took us over the Harbour bridge at the start and through the city before heading out into the suburbs and back into the city to finish up at the Opera House.

I didnt feel too great at the start but once I got warmed up I set a nice pace and was ahead of the 3hr 15min pacers on the course. That all changed though when I got to 18 miles and started to struggle. I got overtaken by the 3:15 pacer and then the battle was on to keep ahead of the 3:30 pacer which I was winning until the 23rd mile when I got a cramp in my hamstring and had to take it very easy. The last 3 miles were torture and the fact that the course wasnt through the city centre but on some very quiet back streets with absolutely no crowd support didnt help. That all changed with about half a mile to and the crowds around the Circular Quay and the Opera house lent a much needed boost to my very battered and tired legs.

Got over the finish line in 3hours and 38minutes, a new personal best.

If you want to check me out crossing the finish line type in my surname or bib number 6108 http://www.byourbest.com/Finish/
