Umea

Firstly let me Thank Gunnar and Lisa Lott for putting up with me for 4 days. For those of you who do not know, Gunnar and I were exchange student to the USA way back in 1980. I thought it was time to visit him as he owed me a drink! And he had half of the change from the last drink we had, our “Half Dollar” which needed to be put back together.

Gunnar introduced me to the extreme entertainment of Northern Sweden and took me to see 8 cows being let out into a field for the first time after a long cold winter indoors. Before you say it, I know but you must remember that Northern Swedes do not get out much! And so over 2000 people turned up to eat homemade Ice Cream, Swedish Pastry’s, Burgers and Coffee (did you know the Swedes drink the second most amount of coffee in the world after Finland? Well no you do!) Actually it was great fun and with Gunnar knowing so many people I met even more potential night stops er! I mean friends!

On Saturday Lisa Lott and Gunnar took me into the main Town of Umea where there was a Kulturenoch going on. I did make them promise that all the people would not be dancing, but as it turned out I nearly was when we stood outside till late evening listening to the Swedish answer to Status Quo! Matt Romader. He turned out to be very good even if I didn’t understand a word, but he tried to made me understand by taking the English was of making Jonny Foreigner understand, He just made it very Loud! But also very good!

You will also see that I have now seen my first Reindeer and this water fall is special as it is on the Pite River which is one of only 4 major rivers that is not used to produce Hydro Electricity.

I am now only just below the Arctic circle so it is still quite cold so tonight I shall wrap up warm for tomorrow I head into the Arctic wastelands!!!
